In Portable Stove Explosion Case, Taylor & Ring Obtains $700,000 For 5 Injured Students
David Ring and Robert Clayton of Taylor & Ring obtained a $700,000 settlement from the Torrance Unified School District on behalf of five students who were injured in 2010 by a portable stove explosion at North High School. Two of the students suffered serious injuries, including second-degree burns to their face and body. Luckily, the students each made a remarkable recovery from their injuries.
The high school students were injured when an explosion created a fireball in their classroom. According to a Torrance Fire Department investigation the fire was due to improperly using a portable stove inside the classroom for a lunch fundraiser. The 2011 lawsuit named the school district and two companies who manufactured and distributed the stove. The settlement for $700,000 involved only the school district.
“It was a very fair settlement given their injuries,” said Mr. Ring. “It could have been a really, really tragic situation.”
