David Ring Addresses Another Sex Abuse Scandal In Los Angeles Unified School District

David Ring of Taylor & Ring discusses the implications of yet another sexual abuse scandal occurring in the nation’s largest public school system, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) . After years of complaints were apparently ignored, Robert Pimentel, a former fourth grade teacher at LAUSD, was arrested on suspicion of molesting 20 students.

Mr. Pimentel taught at George De La Torre, Jr. Elementary School in Los Angeles for about a year, but has been a teacher in the district since 1974. There were several serious complaints made about Pimentel’s abuse of students, yet the principal of the school ignored those complaints. When this information became public, the principal was fired.

It seems incredible that the serious complaints could be ignored for so long. Mr. Ring blames it on the “circle the wagon” approach. He tells The Daily Beast in an interview, “It is a culture of indifference where the teachers are looking out for other teachers. They don’t want to get involved or make accusations, so they turn away. They are more concerned about protecting their own jobs and reputations.”
