Desert Sands Unified School District Facing One of Many Molestation Claims
A former student alleges that Desert Sands Unified School District knowingly employed a child predator and exposed countless students to him. Three lawsuits have already been filed against the school district, with two ongoing cases and one other having settled earlier this year. However, it’s expected that many more allegations will arise.
The claims stem from the case of Robert Keith Bryan, an elementary school teacher who worked for the district for 26 years before being arrested in 2012. Bryan pleaded guilty to molesting eight girls while he worked at Gerald Ford Elementary School in Indian Wells, California.
One of the victims who filed suit claims that the district knew Bryan had a history of touching young girls, but kept him in the classroom anyway. The district settled a lawsuit from another victim earlier this year, and the third suit is still ongoing.
The district offered a $650,000 settlement to one of the victims, but her family turned the offer down. “For what that family’s kid went through, the settlement offer was not justice,” said Dave Ring of Taylor & Ring. “But it’s more than just that. The family felt silenced by the settlement offer, and they want the public to see what really happened in the school district.”
