Upcoming HBSAOC Forum: Stop Sexual Predators—Force Change, Right Now
The Harvard Business School Association of Orange County (HBSAOC) plans to hold a forum on fighting sexual predators on Thursday, May 10, 2018, entitled “Stop Sexual Predators—Force Change, Right Now.” The forum, focused on practical solutions and actionable change, will feature a multi-speaker panel with all proceeds going toward rape crisis centers and support for victims of sexual predators.
One of the speakers on the panel is Chelsea Burkett, an activist and leader in prevention of sexual assault and victim’s rights. Ms. Burkett, who also has an MBA from Harvard Business School, is working to shine a light on a practice known as “passing the trash” in school systems. “Passing the trash” is a way schools rid themselves of predatory teachers by giving them acceptable recommendations, so they can go work at another school and potentially hurt a new group of vulnerable children.
Ms. Burkett speaks passionately to this issue as she has personal experience. A decade ago, when she was a 16-year-old high school student, one of her teachers targeted her for sexual abuse. She kept her severely traumatic experience private until 2014, when another alumnus of her school came forward with similar allegations against the same teacher.
Last year, after filing a civil suit against Marlborough School and Viewpoint School, she bravely came forward and talked about her abuse on ABC’s Nightline, giving a face and a voice to victims everywhere.
About the panel
Other panelists include Niniane Wang (Niantic), Robin Abcarian (Los Angeles Times), Tina Rad (Wagener Law), and Dave Ring (Taylor & Ring). Dave represented Chelsea Burkett in her lawsuit.
The panel will be moderated by Linda Boudiab El Awar and Thomas Dean. The panelists will discuss their experiences and realities, but the forum is designed to create and share practical and immediate solutions.
Attendees will receive a one-page “cheat sheet” to take home with information on highly effective yet simple actions they can do today to fight sexual predators.
