Types of sexual abuse and assault committed in youth organizations
Most sexual abuse of children occurs at the hands of someone close to you or your child, such as a coach, counselor, advisor, agent, administrator or other staff. Children and adult survivors in every age group have been sentenced to a life of learning to cope with the harm done to them by their abusers and those who protected them. The abusive behaviors suffered includes:
- Sexual exploitation: The sexual abuse of a child through exchanging sex or sexual acts for drugs, food, shelter, protection, other necessities of life, or money.
- Fondling: This is the inappropriate touching of a child in a sexual manner.
- Child pornography: Any visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct involving a minor. This category includes what has become known as “sexting,” which is the sending of inappropriate images via text message when they involve children.
- Sexual assault: Sexual activity with a child that may be committed by other means than force or violence, and does not necessarily involve penetration.
- Rape: Any penetration of any body part with a sexual organ, and/or the invasion of the genital or anal opening of a child with any object or body part.
Putting a child through the trauma of a sexual assault or committing long term sexual abuse is horrific enough on its own. Organizations choosing not to implement added safety measures, or failing to provide regular supervision means children spend the rest of their lives in pain. Our knowledgeable attorneys understand how damaging child sex abuse is and will handle yours or your child’s case delicately and respectfully. Victims and adult survivors should be afforded the opportunity to stand up to their abuser and be compensated for their suffering.
Sexual abuse and assault prevention in San Francisco
You can’t always prevent sexual abuse from happening, but you can help stop it from happening again. League sports, youth groups, and organized group events are all breeding grounds for predatory behavior that your children could become the victims of. These environments encourage and expect adults and children to interact providing ample opportunity to cultivate an inappropriate relationship that leads to abusing a child. Although these groups and organizations being fairly self-supervisory makes detection of abuse more difficult, the organization itself is still liable for putting safeguards in place to protect your children.
The only way to stop abuse is to tell someone about it who you can trust. It’s a scary but important first step that every victim or survivor can make to take back the power that was stolen from them.
Predators require secrecy to inflict their abuse. The last thing he or she wants is for a victim to go public because it not only ends the abuse, but it means embarrassment and punishment that can last the rest of the perpetrator’s life. He or she may go to prison, have to pay restitution, and will be followed around by a criminal record every time a job or rental application is filled out.
Your child deserves to grow up and have the life that he or she was intended to have before being throw off course by a violent, life-altering act. Seeking counseling services for victims of child sexual abuse and assault is paramount. Studies have shown that 23% of adult attackers have a history of child sexual abuse, themselves. Dealing with the emotions and psychological trauma of childhood sexual assault can help prevent creating a new generation of perpetrators.
